My great-uncle was a national park ranger from the 50s and would say it’s fine to talk to your horse and mule. It’s when they talk back that you’ve been out too long.

Reminds me of an old advice column I read where a woman was concerned that the combination of a pet cat and a knitting hobby meant she was destined for spinsterhood. She was told all was good unless she was knitting sweaters for the cat.

Well my cat is the type who tries to jump into the toilet when you catch him sitting in the bathroom, or he dips his feet in the water to suckerpunch his sister in the neck with a wet paw. True sibling love there.

Your great uncle was on to something there. I wonder if it was him that thought of it or his horse.
